Barbariga is a tourist resort located on the west coast of Istria, between Rovinj
in the north and Pula
in the south, approximately 20km from either city. Barbariga was named after a Venetian aristocratic family Barbarigo, who had an estate in this area. Although Barbariga is not a big place, it played a significant historical role. The remnants of two Roman villas dating back to the 1st Century were discovered at the shore, and the remnants of an Ancient oil mill were discovered in the hinterland. The discovered mosaics testify to the existence of a villa that belonged to a powerful Roman. The

the famous local restaurants Bukaleta, Betiga and Danijela is not only appreciated by the tourists but also by the locals (from Pula, Fazana, etc.) who often stop by Barbariga and organize parties, birthdays, weddings or some other celebrations. The remains of St. Andrija's monastery were discovered in the vicinity of Barbariga (mosaics, frescoes, tombs), along with the remains of the Church of St. Agneza, and the remains of a Roman villa that was populated from the 1st to the 7th Century that were found on Dragonera (between Barbariga and Peroj). The Church of St. Foska with the shrine that has old 12th Century wall paintings is also located in the vicinity.
