Drasnice is a small village on Makarska Riviera. It belongs to the Podgora
County. The name Drasnice comes from the brambles plant (drac) that grows in this area and was used to improve the taste of grappa. Although this area has been inhabited since the Illyrian times, the village was first mentioned in the 15th Century, when the people from the neighboring Bosnia escaped from the Turks and organized the settlement there. As all other settlements in the Makarska area, the old village was not located by the sea but at the bottom of the mountain where it was safer. After the big earthquake in 1962,

the inhabitants moves by the sea and founded the today's tourist resort. The walk to the old village is like a walk through forgotten times, as the old abandoned houses have kept their interiors, and one can see the remains of tools used in the old crafts in front of the houses. The village of Drasnice has barely three hundred inhabitants, and the residents mostly engage in fishing, olive growing, winemaking and, of course, tourism, providing the accommodation services in villas, apartments and rooms. The vicinity of the neighboring towns and cities provides the inhabitants with the

opportunity to seek employment in other industries as well. In the summer, the number of people in Drasnice multiplies exponentially, be it the locals that vacation here or tourists. Other than apartments, Drasnice offers tourists several pebble beaches, clear and warm sea, and the vicinity of major tourist centers. The protector of the village is St. George (Sveti Juraj), a Christian martyr under Diocletian who preached the Christianity at the time of greatest persecutions. St. George's Day is on 23 April, when the Church of St. George holds a celebratory mass. The trademark of this place is Adriana - the seal which is unfortunately no longer present in the Adriatic sea, and the last specimens were seen right here, at the nearby cave Medvidine that was named after these animals. The reason behind their extinction lies in the fact that they were destroying fishermen's nets.
