Brac, or an elaphite island, was most probably named after the Illyrian word brentos (deer). The Greeks also called it elaphus (deer), and this might be because once upon a time the island was inhabited by deer, which are unfortunately no longer there. With its 395m2, Brac is the largest island of Central Dalmatia and the third largest island of the Adriatic Sea. It is also the highest Croatian island with the elevation of 778m on Vidova Gora, hill above Bol with a magnificent view of Hvar, Vis and Split. developed on the island that currently has over 500,000 olive trees. Older settlements have developed inland, while newer settlements that are focused on tourism have developed by the sea. Destinations on Brac that should be mentioned include Supetar, the administrative centre of the island with a ferry service that connects it to mainland, as well as villages of Bol, Milna, Sutivan, Postira, Pucisca, Povlja, Nerezisca, Selca and Sumartin that is connected to Makarska by ferry service. All of these villages are crowded with tourists in the summer, which means there are plenty of accommodation capacities, apartments, villas and hotels. To mention some: Waterman Resorts, Hotel Elaphusa, Bracka Perla, Ivan, Amor, Palaca Deskovic, Zlatni Rat and other.
