Together with the town of Hvar, Stari Grad and Sucuraj, Jelsa is a significant maritime centre of the Island of Hvar. Jelsa and its harbor are located on the north side of the island, as well as village of Vrboska that is located 3km from Jelsa and can be reached by car or on foot. Municipality of Jelsa includes picturesque villages in a 30km stretch over the central part of the island: Svirce, Vrisnik, Pitve, Humac, Poljica, Zastrazisce and Gdinj, and on the south side of the island: Ivan Dolac, Zavala and Gromin Dolac. oldest settlements on the island. In the immediate vicinity there was a swamp "Fons vocata Ielsa", after which Jelsa was named. The swamp was drained in the 19th century. One of the oldest sites of Jelsa and of the Island of Hvar is the 4th century BC Illyrian-Greek tower Tor. The tower was built of huge stone blocks southeast of Jelsa, at the altitude of 230m, with medieval fortress Galesnik nearby. Baroque-Renaissance Square of St. John. Popular procession "Za krizen" (After the Cross) that was first recorded in the 17th century, best depicts the piety of the island folk. The procession starts at 10 p.m. on Maundy Thursday and includes six parishes in the stretch of 22km. Lavenderman, a comic book hero who gets his strength to fight insects and headaches from lavender plant, is the product of Jelsa. Don't forget to buy a bag of lavender for your closet or a bottle of beneficial lavender oil. Accommodation in Jelsa is provided by Adriatiq Resort Fontana (that includes former Hotel Jadran which was originally opened in 1911!), Hotel Hvar, camps Mina, Holiday and Grebisce, villas and apartments of the locals. Nearby Vrboska offers accommodation at Hotel Adriatic, FKK camp Nudist, as well as private apartments.
