Komiza - the second largest village on the Island of Vis - is located on the west side of the island, in a wide bay at the bottom of Hum Hill (587m) and Mali Hum Hill (515m). Its name is thought to come from the word Com Issa (place next to Issa - antique settlement, today the town of Vis). Komiza is a typical Mediterranean settlement with narrow streets, closely built stone houses that are concentrated around the harbor, numerous beaches, cultural and historical monuments and hospitality service offer, primarily private apartments. Komiza is considered to be the birthplace of fishing on the

east coast of the Adriatic Sea. Komiza waters are rich with blue fish (islet of Jabuka is known for the richest tuna fishing waters) and the entire Vis Archipelago is rich with white crabs and white fish. In town, on the shore, there is a Venetian fortress Komuna, built at the end of the 16th century. It was used for defense against the Turks and pirates. Today, it is the site of the Museum of Fishing and Fish Industry of the Island of Vis, and it holds one of the symbols of Komiza and the island - falkusa (fishing boat with rounded hull, pointy prow and stern with a sail). On a hill, there is

the Parish Church of St. Nicholas with the remains of walls of a 13th century fortress. In front of the church and all the way to town descends the famous Komiza vineyard. There are numerous other towers, fortresses, and churches on the island, along with military buildings, among which also Tito's Cave at the hillsides of Hum, near Podspilje. During the World War II, this used to be the location of one of the secret military headquarters of Tito's army and the government. The nearby islet of Visevo hides one of the most beautiful Croatian natural phenomena - Modra spilja (Blue Cave). It is accessed by a small rowboat, and the light accesses it through the second largest opening below the sea level. Other than Hotel Bisevo, Komiza also offers a large number of rooms and apartments in family and vacation houses. With accommodation in Komiza and the surrounding villages, one should also mention restaurants, taverns, pizzerias and local rural households to sum up the complete offer of hospitality services.
