Six kilometers from the town of Korcula, at the far east part of the island, there is Lumbarda, a village with about 1000 inhabitants. Surrounded by arable fields, hills and sea, the settlement was established in the 3rd century BC. From the Roman times one can see the remains of Villa Rustica near Lumbarda. Rich families built their vacation houses and fortresses here, some of which are still inhabited today (fortresses Nobilo, Krsinic and Milina). The old part of Lumbarda is named Vela Glavica, which is the location of the Church of St. Roko, patron saint of Lumbarda. The village has several other churches and chapels: Mala Gospa, St. Peter, St. Bartul. Along with agriculture and fishing, people of Lumbarda also used to work as stonemasons (Ivan-Ivo Lozica, Lujo Lozica, Frano Krsinic, etc.). Today, tourism plays an important role in Lumbarda which has several restaurants (Barakokula, Feral, Levant, More), taverns (Bebic, Dusica, Lovric, Zure), hotels (Lumbarda, Borik), villas, camps, apartments and a small marina. Lumbarda offers accommodation in a long coastal stretch. The organizer of local events is the cultural art association Ivo Lozica which nourishes song, dance and folklore customs of this area that are presented during Lumbarda uzanci, from the beginning of June to the end of September. From the sea, Lumbarda is additionally protected by a group of small islands: Knezic, Gubavac, Bisace, Sutvara, Vrnik, Kamenjak and Planjak that will surely be a part of the itinerary for tourists with boats and for sailors. Tatinja and Bilin zal are popular beaches with paved shore, while further to the east one can find untouched rocky sea entrances, so-called Lenga Brendana. This far end of Korcula is covered in pine forest and it is popular among divers. On the south side of the island, 500m from Bilin Zal Bay there is Vela Przina sandy beach, popular beach among people of Korcula.
