Picturesque town with approximately fifteen thousand inhabitants is located at the estuary of River Cetina. It was first mentioned as Oneum on the 1st century stone objects of Roman emperors Tiberius and Augustus, which are currently exhibited at the City Museum. This was obviously an important settlement in Roman times, located on the east bank of River Zetna (today known as Cetina) - a name that is derived from the Frigean word "zetna" meaning "gate", as the cliffs at the estuary of River Cetina indeed resemble a monumental gate. Until the end of the 13th century, Omis pirates were known to attack Papal galleys and merchant ships of mighty Venetians, Ragusa, Split and wider. Two crusades were launched against them. Today, pirates are the symbol and cultural heritage of Omis, and Pirate Nights are traditionally organized in Omis during the summer. There are remains of two city fortresses from those times: Mirabela (Peovica) and Starigrad (Fortica) from which one can see the entire Omis, Brac Canal, islands and River Cetina Canyon. Omis includes the offer of hotels (Diadem, Plaza, Villa Dvor), private apartments and several motor camps, with the most popular being Galeb Camp at the very entrance to Omis, by the sea. In the summer, the best visited place in Omis is its shallow, sandy city beach. During your stay in Omis you should go on an excursion to visit the monument of a heroine, Mila Gojsalic (near Gat) who stood up to the Turks and risked her own life to kill Ahmed Pasha and numerous soldiers who camped in the area. You should certainly attend the Festival of Dalmatian Klapa Omis, visit Radmanove mlinice that is located 5km down the lower flow of River Cetina. On the way, you can see mountain-climbers and alpinists already in the spring. They are also often guests in camps, rooms and apartments of Omis people.
