A city and a port on the right bank of River Drava. Illyrians and Celts founded a settlement of Mursa here in the 3rd century BC, and in the 1st century AD the Romans had upgraded the old settlement of Mursa to a colony. In the 5th century, the settlement of Mursa fell to ruins during the migrations, and in the 12th century it was mentioned as Osijek. In the 16th century it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and turned into the centre of a sanjak, only to be freed in the 17th century.
