Podgora is a small settlement on Makarska Riviera that forms the municipality of Podgora, together with settlements of Drasnice, Igrane and Zivogosce. It was first mentioned after the battle of Lepant in 1571. Podgora has always had a connection to the sea, so it is not surprising that the Navy of the National Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments of Yugoslavia (NOVJ) were founded here, later developing into the Yugoslavian Navy. In 1962, sculptor Rajko Radovic built the Galebovo krilo (Wing of a Seagull) monument that is over twenty meters tall. It was erected above Podgora and it became the

symbol of Podgora and of Croatian fight against the fascism. As with many of the villages along Makarska Riviera, the old village was not founded by the sea due to pirates and robbers. It was located at the foot of Mt. Biokovo where inaccessible cliffs and rocks provided excellent cover against possible attacks. However, after the earthquake of 1962, people moved by the sea and with the development of tourism Podgora has become a tourist destination. It has six hotels (Minerva, Podgorka, Mediteran, Aurora, Sirena and Primordia) and numerous apartments that best reflect the interest of

visitors. To prevent visitors from becoming bored sunbathing and swimming in what they say is the clearest sea on the Adriatic coast, the Tourist Board organizes many events: Chanson Festival, Klapa Concerts, fishermen's nights, fishermen's tales and poetry evenings, and it's not lacking sports events either, such as small soccer tournaments, etc. Actually, from 15th of June to 15th of July, Podgora celebrates Navy Days, with a different program every day, and sometimes even several events per day, which makes this little village rather interesting. Golden beaches, dark blue sea, white Biokovo cliffs, green olive groves and vineyards are the impressions one remembers with nostalgia. Of course, Podgora is not lacking accommodation capacities either, rooms or apartments.
