A city in the southwest part of the Pozega golden valley - the RomanVallis Aurea. Following the prehistoric and Roman settlements, Pozega was mentioned in the 13th century as the residence of Croatian-Hungarian queens and as the centre of the County in the 16th century. In the 16th century it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and was the centre of Pozega sanjak. It was freed in the 17th century and declared a Free Royal City in the 18th century - "Slavonian Athens" with a Jesuit philosophy academy - Academia Posegana.
