Velo misto (Grand City), Beautiful Mediterranean Flower, Diocletian's City, City under Marjan - are just some of the metaphors used to describe the largest Adriatic city - Split. With over 1700 year old history, Split is best known for the Diocletian's Palace which has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1979. Roman Emperor Diocletian did not choose this city at random to build his grand palace (area of approx. 30,000m2) in the middle of the bay, at the bottom of Marjan, near his birthplace of Salona. Solta, abundance of fresh water from River Jadro and the beauty of the sea have all influenced the Emperor's selection of this peninsula once called Aspalathos, and today - the City of Split. centre of the city with its cult bars, Vocni trg (Fruit Square) encircled by the magnificent tower with a view of the sea and Split Riva (waterfront promenade) - where people of all ages spend their days in Split. People come here to see and, above all, to be seen. Peskarija (fish market) and Pazar (market) are intended for those who like Mediterranean ambiance, while nature enthusiasts can go for a walk, run or a bike ride to the forested Marjan. Split is surrounded by miles of beaches and unlike most cities, other than pebble beaches, it also has sandy beaches among which one should definitely single out Bacvice Beach and the game of "picigin" that is played there in the shallow sea, be it summer or winter. Concerts, festivals, cultural, artistic and sports events in Split are an everyday occurrence. As economic, cultural, tourist and of course sports centre of Dalmatia, Split has ensured great accommodation capacities in hotels, boarding houses and apartments. Rooms and apartments can be found in the very centre of Split, and further south you will find hundreds of apartments and true apartment resorts.
