A city and a port at the confluence of River Vuka and Danube that has been inhabited for 5000 years, since the Early Stone Age. In the 9th century, it was the seat of duke Pribina. In the 13th century it was the centre of Wolcou County and after that it was a tripartite settlement: a fort above Danube, Podgrade - a Free Royal City and marketplace Varos. During the Ottoman rule, in the 16th and the 17th centuries, it was a town with approximately 200 houses and in the 18th century it was the Baroque twin city: the civil Old Vukovar on the right bank of River Vuka and New Vukovar on the left bank -
